Stuffs

[ PREVIEW ]

A preview of movies opening this weekend:

>> "Freddy vs. Jason" -- Two franchise horror villains square off as the razor-fingered madman from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies and the hockey-masked slasher of "Friday the 13th" finally take on each other. It's taken studio New Line Pictures 11 years to bring their matchup to the big screen. The story goes that kids on Elm Street are being drugged by their parents with a dream suppressant to keep Mr. Krueger away. A powerless Freddy rouses Jason and sics him on his old 'hood to stir up fear and, he hopes, a new generation of nightmares. Surprise! -- the partnership doesn't go well because, darn it all, Jason's killing Freddy's victims! (R)

>> "Grind" -- A road comedy about four skateboarding enthusiasts who follow the summer tour of one of the extreme sport's stars from Chicago to Oceanside, Calif., hoping to attract enough attention to land a major sponsor and become pros just like their hero. (PG-13)

>> "Open Range" -- Kevin Costner hopes to revive the all-audience western genre with this drama he directs and stars in, sharing the billing with Robert Duvall and Annette Bening. In Costner's drama, four cattle herders come into conflict with a ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) whose grip over a small town allows him to run an outlaw state. (R)

>> "Uptown Girls" -- Brittany Murphy plays a free-spirited New York socialite who loses her inheritance and must work as a nanny for a precocious 8-year-old (Dakota Fanning). Both of them feel alone in the world, but as they try to make their new arrangement work, each discovers in the other a true friend. Boaz Yakin, of "Remember the Titans," directs. (PG-13)

Fukubukuro goodies at Ala Moana

Fukubukuro -- a Japanese New Year's tradition -- returns to Ala Moana Center on Saturday.

Shoppers are expected to line up outside their favorite stores for this grab-bag-of-goodies event.

Art "Fukubukuro" literally means "surprise bag." Retailers come up with gift items to place in their shops' bags, which are sealed to keep contents a mystery and priced at least 50 percent off the retail value of the items inside.

Shoppers will be able to identify participating stores by the red and white Fukubukuro signage and lime- green bags displayed.

Last year's event drew a great response from shoppers and retailers. A few examples of last year's Fukubukuro goodies: Christian Dior's offering of a shoulder bag, purse and cologne; Burberry's presentation of a wallet, handbag, scarf and muffler; and Baccarat's bagful of a crystal ornament, butterfly pin and butterfly necklace.

Participating stores on Saturday will include Agnes B., Baccarat, Blumarine/Anna Molinari, Burberry, Celine, Fendi, Folli Follie, Hilo Hattie, Locals Only, Pacific Harley-Davidson, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sephora, the Compleat Kitchen and Christian Dior.

The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. while supplies last.

Dan's back
