Big Isle search goes on for missing hiker
HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK >> Eighteen National Park Service employees resumed a search yesterday for Timothy Lynch, a Hawaii Volcanoes National Park visitor whose rented car was found abandoned at the end of Chain of Craters Road Friday.
The search had been hampered by the park's emergency response to a helicopter crash Sunday, the park said.
Lynch, 44, of Indiana, is believed to have been hiking and photographing in the eruption area.
One member of the search team suffered heat exhaustion and had to be airlifted out yesterday. The search was to resume today in the eruption area and along the coast, according to park officials.
Fumes force closure of a satellite city hall
The city closed the Satellite City Hall and City Store at Ala Moana Center and reassigned the staff to other satellite locations yesterday after employees complained of fumes.
One worker reported having teary eyes. However, none of the staff complained of serious health problems.
The fumes came from the former site of J.C. Penney where solvent was being used, said Dwight Yoshimura, Hawaii general manager for General Growth Properties Inc., owner of Ala Moana Center.
The city's Ala Moana Center site is scheduled to reopen today.
Kapolei business cited for hazardous waste
A Kapolei business was cited by the state Health Department yesterday for violating the state's hazardous waste rules.
Beachside Roofing LLC was cited for mismanagement and treatment of hazardous wastes and storage of hazardous waste without a permit, the Health Department said in a news release. Containers of hazardous waste and waterproof coatings were left open, allowing solvent components to be released into the air, the state said.
Company officials said they were unaware of the complaint.

Arson determined as cause of Ewa blaze
Fire investigators have determined that the fire that destroyed an Ewa Beach home Monday was intentionally set and have turned the matter over to police.
The fire started inside a bedroom at the rear of the house at 91-1030 Fort Weaver Road, said Capt. Kenison Tejada, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
Police arrested a 51-year-old man Monday after he allegedly threatened a neighbor who suggested he set fire to his own home. The man was later taken to Castle Medical Center for mental health evaluation. Police arson investigators have yet to question the man.
Fire investigators also have revised their damage estimate to an adjacent house. They said the fire caused $140,000 damage to the two-story house at 91-1032 Fort Weaver Road. Their earlier estimate was $80,000.

Suspect in attempted bank robbery sought
Big Island police are looking for a man who tried unsuccessfully to rob the Home Street Bank in Hilo yesterday afternoon.
Police said shortly after 1 p.m., the suspect was seen walking into the bank wearing a cloth over his head, a respirator covering his nose and mouth, dark-colored pants and a long-sleeved shirt. The suspect then brandished a knife and demanded money several times from the tellers, police said.
However, police said the tellers instead ignored the suspect's demands, and at that point he climbed over the counter and unsuccessfully tried to open locked drawers.
Police said the suspect then climbed back over the counter into the lobby area where he again demanded money. When he failed, he threw his knife down and ran out of the bank, police said.
The suspect was last seen riding a dark-colored bicycle toward Kilauea Avenue in the Puna direction.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Detective Greg Esteban at 961-2384, the police non-emergency number at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
