New jobs

>> Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific has elected Stuart Ho president and chief executive officer. Jim Wo has been named chairman of the board and Ron Ho has been named vice chairman. The hospital has also named the following directors: Roger Finnie, Benjamin Kudo, John Komeiji, Glenn Sexton, Myron Shirasu and Keith Matsunaga. Elected to REHAB Foundation's board were: Eileen Kauhane Lota, George M. Irion, William Davis and Fred Trotter.

>> Robin C. Kim was named Hawaii Schools Federal Credit Union president and chief executive officer. He will report to the credit union's board and be charged with day-to-day management of more than $50 million in assets. He will also aim to expand the credit union's membership. Kim was most recently in a management position at another local credit union.

>> Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing has hired Thomas E. Bush and Sharon On Leng as attorneys of counsel. Bush, whose emphasis is in commercial litigation, was a partner at Winer Meheula Devens & Bush. On Leng, whose practice focuses on health care law, served as Hawaii Pacific Health general counsel. Other new attorneys have joined the firm as associates: Laura P. Couch, practicing in the areas of partnership disputes; Betsy J. Johnson and Darren S. Matsuda, civil litigation specialists; Melissa Teves Pavlicek, a business transactions and government affairs lawyer; and Elizabeth Apodaca Robinson, who recently completed a clerkship with Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals Judge Dan Foley.

>> Island Insurance Cos. has hired Joy O. Yamauchi and Christy T. De Vlugt as entry underwriters in the personal insurance division. Yamauchi has been a personal lines customer service representative at a number of local insurance agencies. De Vlugt was previously with Grange Insurance Group in Seattle, Wash.

>> Communications Pacific has hired Grant Kawaguchi as a marketing communications group assistant account executive and Melissa Kamei as a corporate communications practice account coordinator. Kawaguchi previously worked for a year and a half at PRWorks.

On the board

>> First Insurance Co. of Hawaii has named David McClain to its board of directors. McClain is dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and First Hawaiian Bank Distinguished Professor of Leadership and Management at UH. He is also the university's interim vice president for research. First Insurance is a Hawaii-based property and casualty insurer.

>> Mark Beede of Hawaii Pacific Tennis Foundation has been elected president of the Aloha Society of Association Executives. Other officers are: Vice President Cynthia Hayakawa of NAIFA Hawaii, Secretary Barbara Kono of the Hawaii Wall & Ceiling Industry Association, Treasurer Kathy Castillo of the Hawaii Society of CPAs, and Alison Powers of the Hawaii Insurers Council is immediate past president. Directors are: Roberta Cullen of Roberta Cullen Organizations Management, Tim Lyons of the Legislative Center, Gail Glushenko of Aloha Airlines, Cheryl Fernandez of Sheraton Hotels-Hawaii, Carl Takamura of the Hawaii Business Roundtable, Lowell Kalapa of Tax Foundation of Hawaii, Brian Lee of Hawaii Construction Industry Association, and Edward Thompson of Legislative Information Services of Hawaii.

>> Charlotte Clark has been elected to the La Pietra Board of trustees for a two-year term. Her daughter, Maria Francis Parkhill, graduated from La Pietra in 1974. La Pietra is a non-denominational school for girls, grades six through 12.

>> Society of Asian Art of Hawaii has elected Will Hughes president. Other officers are: Vice President Roger Bellinger, Secretary Kay Graham and Treasurer Ernest Lee. Directors are: Vivien Stackpole, Philip Roach and Sam Kagesa. The society was established in 1974 as the Oriental Art Society. It hosts monthly meetings with a guest speaker on Asian arts and sponsors an annual Honolulu Academy of Arts Asian Arts Department intern scholarship award.

Recognition

>> The University of Hawaii and University of Hawaii Alumni Association honored six people with the 2003 Distinguished Alumni Award: Big Island Candies President Allan Ikawa, retired First Hawaiian Bank Vice Chairman Howard Karr, Group 70 International Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Francis Oda, Pacific Management Resources President and CEO Puongpun Sananikone and PT & Co. CEO and Creative Director Patrice Tanaka. Former state Supreme Court Chief Justice William S. Richardson was presented the 2003 Founders' Lifetime Achievement Award.

>> The Matsuri in Hawaii Committee of the 24th Annual Pan-Pacific Festival has awarded James Kunichika the 2003 Silversword Award. He instructs the Iwakuni Odori Aikokai bon dance group and serves as lead singer. His audio recordings can be found at the Smithsonian Museum, Library of Congress, Bishop Museum, Hawaii State Culture and Arts Foundation and the University of Hawaii. The award honors community members who have enriched Hawaii's cultural arts.

>> Realtors Michael L. Blaz of Prudential Locations, Kihei, Maui; and Jane D. Le Wright of Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties, Kailua, have earned a certified residential specialist designation from the Council of Residential Specialist in Chicago. This is the highest designation awarded to residential sales associates and recognizes professional experience and education.

>> Holua Resort General Manager Chris Breed has earned the registered resort professional designation from the American Resort Development Association for completing various educational requirements. The resort's front office manager, Cindy Stowell, has been awarded a Hawaii Hotel Association Honorable Mention for her experience, community involvement and contributions to her company.
