Robb, Irons
into Round 3


TAVARUA, Fiji >> Kalani Robb and Andy Irons carried the torch for Hawaii at the latest ASP Quicksilver spot, winning their first round heats to win a day off.

Robb survived one of the closest competitions of the day, beating Phillip MacDonald 16.33-16.10 in the first heat.

Irons didn't have to work quite as hard as Robb, scoring a 17.6 to win his heat over Tom Carroll, who scored 15. Irons and Robb get a bye into the third round.

Shane Dorian and Fred Pataccia lost their first round heats, though, forcing them to fight back through the loser's draw.

Pataccia scored only 10.70 points in his first heat and improved to 11.34 in the second but lost to Taj Burrow's 15.50 to be eliminated.

Hawaii represented on national team

Brian Ching is one of 17 players United States National Team manager Bruce Arena has selected for tonight's international soccer match against Wales at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

The Kamehameha graduate is the first Hawaii player to be selected to the national team.

Ching remains in stable condition

Former University of Hawaii volleyball player Tony Ching remained in stable condition recovering from injuries suffered in a traffic accident.

Dr. Haochin Ho, Ching's attending physician, said his chances of full recovery are "excellent."

Morioka named Iolani soccer coach

Kari Morioka is returning to coach the Iolani girls soccer program.

An Iolani and Harvard graduate, Morioka was the Raiders' girls coach from 1994-2000.Iolani won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title in 1998 and the ILH and state crown the following year.

Morioka was the ILH and state coach of the year in 1999.

She has been an assistant coach for the women's soccer team at Nevada, as assistant at Hawaii Pacific and the assistant director of coaching for the Mililani Soccer Club.Morioka was also a member of the Olympic Development Program at Idaho.

Iolani was 5-4-1 this past season, finishing third in the ILH.
