Roper rewarded
for defense at Wahine
basketball banquet


Senior center Christen Roper received two honors last night, including the Ah Chew Goo Achievement Award, at the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball banquet at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Roper also was named the team's Most Outstanding Defensive Player. The 6-foot-5 center set a number of block records this season, including a UH and Western Athletic Conference single-season (110), WAC career (303), UH single game (8) and WNIT single game (7).

Sophomore forward Kim Willoughby, an All-American in volleyball, was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player. She lead the Wahine in scoring, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.

Seniors Natasja Allen and Michelle Gabriel shared the Most Inspirational Award. The Scholar-Athlete Award went to sophomore forward Jade Abele, who has a 3.44 grade-point average in physical education.

Cotter, Tennant top Lanikai Triathlon field

James Cotter was second after the first leg of yesterday's 2nd Bike Factory Lanikai Triathlon, but used the event's fastest bike ride in pulling away to victory over some 300 participants.

Cotter was timed in 55 minutes, 46 seconds to finish ahead of Mark Speck by 36 seconds. Speck finished in 56:22 with Chris Larson third in 56:47 on a course comprised of a 500-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run.

Tennant led the women's division from start to finish in an hour and 48 seconds. Tanya Sells, yesterday's fastest female cyclist, was second in 1:02 with Katherine Nichols third in 1:03:24.

Cotter trailed Chad Seymour by four seconds after the swim across Kailua Bay.

Wahine fall to Cardinal in conference finale

STANFORD, Calif. >> The Hawaii women's water polo team saw its six-match winning streak snapped in a 9-3 loss to No. 3 Stanford yesterday at the Avery Aquatic Center.

The seventh-ranked Wahine (10-12 overall, 4-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), spotted the Cardinal a 5-0 lead after two quarters. Freshman Kristy Bagnell got Hawaii on the scoreboard to open the third with the first of her two goals.

Bagnell and Malia Tarayao scored in the fourth for the Wahine but it wasn't enough to catch the Cardinal (16-2, 8-1). Hawaii returns home to prepare for the MPSF Tournament, April 25-27, at Stanford.

Kimo's longboard contest coming up

The 26th annual Kimo's Jerry Boser Memorial Longboard Contest at Maui's Mala Wharf will begin its holding period April 20 through the end of August.

Surfboards are required to be nine to 11 feet with a single fin and no leashes. The winner of the event receives a new "Ole Bumble Bee" surfboard. For more information, contact Jack Starr at 661-4811.

Plantation course site for Verizon tournament

The 13th annual Verizon Hall of Fame Pro-Am and Championship golf tournament will be held May 3-5 at the Kapalua Plantation course on Maui.

Hosted by Verizon, the Hawaii Kapalua Land Company and the Aloha Section of the Professional Golf Association, 28 pros will pair with amateurs in a best-ball format in the pro-am on May 3. The pros will then play in a 36-hole stroke play championship on May 4 and 5.
