Irons joins Garcia
in fourth round


SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia >> Andy Irons is still alive at the Quicksilver Pro after beating Troy Brooks yesterday.

Sunny Garcia advanced to the fourth round on Friday.

"Troy's always a dangerous competitor and he's beat me a few times," Irons said. "The current was really bad out there, so it was hard to get up on waves. I'm stoked it's over."

Irons next faces Jake Paterson, who eliminated Shane Dorion earlier in the week. Garcia will be matched against Mick Fanning.

Mark Occhilupo was near flawless in his Round 3 heat, piling up 19.47 points to oust Luke Hitchings. Americans Kelly Slater and C.J. Hobgood also won their heats.

Beachley wins Roxy: Australian Layne Beachley surfed past countrywoman Trudy Todd 18-13 to win the Roxy Pro.

Todd barely survived her semifinal heat against Jaqueline Silva, edging the Brazilian 16.33-15.76, while Beachley cruised past Sofia Mulanovich of Peru.


UH stays unbeaten in Malihini tourney

Sophomore Melissa Coogan won her seventh straight decision last night as Hawaii beat UC Riverside 4-1 in the Malihini Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Coogan (9-2) scattered six hits against Riverside (5-16).

Trisha Ramos and Marie Jackson had RBIs to give UH (12-7) a 2-0 lead in the second inning. UH has won nine of its past 11 games.

The Rainbow Wahine won twice on Friday night, beating Loyola Marymount 9-2 and Baylor 5-2, with Coogan and Shannon Tabion pitching complete games.

Seasiders earn split: At Hilo, Regina Molifua hit an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field in the 10th inning to give Brigham Young-Hawaii (11-12, 7-9 Pacific West) a 4-2 win over Hawaii-Hilo yesterday.

The Vulcans (8-2, 8-2) won the second game 9-2 behind Megan Spath's two RBIs.

Simms runs Michigan to Big Ten indoor title

Mililani High School graduate Vera Simms helped Michigan win the Big Ten Indoor championships last week.

Simms placed second in the 400-meter dash, posting a season-best time of 55.98 seconds, just behind winner Chioma Ndubisi of Indiana (55.09).

Michigan held off Indiana to defend its indoor title.

Simms will be running in the distance medley team relay for the Wolverines at the NCAA meet in Arkansas next weekend. The junior runs the 400 leg in that event.

Seasiders extend streak to 39 wins

Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis players Adrienn Hegedus and Judy Weng lost for the first time together yesterday, but recovered to win their singles matches and help the Seasiders beat Illinois State 7-2 at Laie yesterday.

The Seasiders have won 39 straight matches.

Hegedus and Weng lost to Liina Suuvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva 8-4 in the doubles, but both swept their opponents in singles play. Only Trisha Piercy lost for the Seasiders, falling to Laura Gravino 6-3, 6-2.

The defending national champion Seasiders take on Bowdoin College on March 13 at Laie.

Bareng qualifies for wrestling tourney

Moanalua High School graduate Joey Bareng will represent San Francisco State at next week's NCAA Division II national wrestling championships.

Bareng is the West Regional champion in the 125-pound class.

Former Crusaders hit QB Club tomorrow

Two NFL centers from Saint Louis School are among the guest speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Two-time All-Pro Olin Kreutz of the Chicago Bears and Dominic Raiola of the Detroit Lions will speak, as will Todd Los Banos, coach of Saint Louis' defending state champion wrestling team.

Also, Iolani swimmer Hong Zhe Sun and Kailua pitcher Courtney Kessell will be honored as February Sportspersons of the Month.

The Quarterback Club meets at the Pagoda Hotel and is open to the public. Lunch starts at 11:30 and the first speaker goes on at noon.
