Warriors place 11th
at Burns tourney

James Beston shot a 71 yesterday for Hawaii, but the Warriors finished the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wahiawa in 11th place, well behind Arizona.

The Wildcats shot a 280--843 to win, with UH placing 10 spots lower with a 288--868.

Beston tied for 12th individually with a 3-under 213. Matt Kodama fired a 76--216 to tie for 26th and Kellen-Floyd Asao finished tied for 38th after a round of 71.

San Diego State's Lars Johansson won the individual title (208) by one shot over Arizona's Chris Nallen and UNLV's Travis Whisman.

The Warriors travel to the Bite Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Santa Barbara, Calif., March 31-April 1.

Local surfers advance at Hansen's

Rocky Cannon and Garrett McNamara had strong days at Pipeline on the first day of the Hansen's Energy Pro.

Haleiwa's Cannon won his first-round heat in surf ranging from from six to 10 feet.

"This is very difficult pipeline," Cannon said. "The wind is your first obstacle. Dropping in you can't even see with the spray in your eyes and the wave is gnarly. Wave selection is a huge part of it on a day like this and surfing here a lot definitely helps."

McNamara advanced two rounds just three days after suffering a head injury that required stitches to his face.

Other Hawaii surfers to reach the third round included Kamalei Alexander, Aamion Goodwin, Ian Walsh and Tamayo Perry.

Hunter impresses at combine

Former Hawaii left tackle Wayne Hunter bench pressed 225 pounds 37 times at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis earlier this week. It is the second-highest total of reps in this year's combine. Tony Pasho of Illinois benched 38 reps.

Kamehameha graduate Makoa Freitas of Arizona did 36 reps and former UH guard Vince Manuwai did 28.

Also, Hunter was timed at between 5.0 and 5.05 in the 40-yard sprint. Hunter's agent, Kenny Zuckerman, said Hunter (6-foot-5 5/8, 303 pounds) was the fastest lineman over 300 pounds.

"He really opened up some eyes. Wayne only played one year (at left tackle). But it's a weak class at left tackle, so he's putting himself in position to be drafted in the top two rounds," Zuckerman said. "After the combine, he's definitely put himself in the top 50. How high he goes from here will be predicated on need."

Hunter decided last month to give up his senior season with the Warriors and make himself available for the NFL Draft.

Today, linebackers, including former UH player Pisa Tinoisamoa, were scheduled to run their 40s.

Former UH players including Hunter, Manuwai, Tinoisamoa, wide receiver Justin Colbert, quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen, running back Thero Mitchell, linebacker Matt Wright, defensive end La'anui Correa, safety Sean Butts and wide receiver Neal Gossett will work out for pro scouts March 11 in Santa Monica, Calif.
