Baca leads by
1 stroke at Waikoloa

Ryan Baca of Baylor carded a 34-32-66 to grab the individual lead yesterday after the first-round of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Waikoloa Kings' and Beach courses.

Baca holds a one-stroke lead over Adam Meyer and Adam Robinson of TCU and Texas Tech's Mark Hull in the three-day competition.

Two shots behind Baca is Nick Watney of Fresno State, the No. 1 player in the nation.

Nevada's Casey Watabu, a graduate of Kauai High School, tops the list of local golfers at 70.

Stanford's Jim Seki (Punahou), who is ranked No. 10 in the nation, is at 71, while Hawaii's Matt Kodama and UH-Hilo's Michael Kim and Kevin Shimomura are at 72.

Other players from Hawaii or has ties to the island include: UH's Eric Chang 73, Justin Kim 75, Jamie Matsumura 75 and Kellen-Floyd Asao 78; UH-Hilo's Michael Kim 72, Kevin Shimamura 72, Nick Mason73, Colin Gilliam 74, and Kellan Anderson 75, and the Air Force Academy's Landon Chang (Waiakea) 77, Jarrett Hamamoto (Waiakea) 77 and Kala'e Leong (Kamehameha) 79.

In the team competition, TCU is first at 276, followed by Oklahoma (281), Lamar and UCLA (283).

Texas Tech is at 284 followed by Houston, Oregon and Georgia Tech (288), Baylor (289) and Arizona State (290).

Host Hawaii-Hilo is tied at 11th with Nevada and Arkansas at 291.

Rounding out the field are USC, Fresno State and Pepperdine at 293, Washington and Hawaii at 295, Mississippi at 296 and Kansas at 297.
