Feather lei

Learn the art of lei hulu, or feather lei making from 9 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Lyon Arboretum, 3860 Manoa Road.

Cost for the class, being taught by Audrey Wagner, is $28 and includes materials for one lei. Poepoe and kamoe lei-making styles will also be covered.

Take a hike

Take in the spectacular views of Diamond Head, Palolo Valley and Manoa Valley as Liz Huppman of Lyon Arboretum leads you on a botanical hike along Waahila Ridge Trail 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 1.

The trek is recommended for expert-level hikers.

Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Waahila Ridge parking lot. Wear comfy shoes and bring rain gear, lunch, at least two liters of water, hat and sunscreen.

Gardening classes

Turn your yard into a grocery, learning to plant bananas and vegetables through Oahu's Urban Garden Center's classes for the home gardener.

The class for growing banana trees, being held 9:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 11, covers planting, fertilizing and watering, as well as common problems and pests. Registration is required two weeks in advance.

Classes on vegetable gardening will be held 9:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 18.

The cost is $5 per class; both will be taught at the center, at 962 2nd St. in Pearl City.

BIA-Hawaii show

Mark your calendars for the Building Industry Association of Hawaii's annual Home Building & Remodeling Show where the latest in building industry products will be showcased Feb. 6-9 at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

Highlights include cooking demonstrations, a construction remnant tent sale full of bargains and a "What's This Worth?" collectibles session.

The event is being sponsored by American Savings Bank, Finance Factors Ltd. and First Hawaiian Bank.

Plant show

Narcissus and bonsai enthusiasts will showcase their best plants at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Feb. 8 and 9 in the Academy Courtyards during museum hours.

The exhibition honors George Ellis, academy director, who will be retiring.
