dreardon@starbulletin.comFrazier declined to disclose names of the candidates, saying they currently hold other jobs. He also declined to say what the salary range is for the position. The new hire will be skilled in operations, finances, and dealing with coaches, he said.
"It's no one in-house," he said, although he added that senior women's administrator Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano will "perhaps have a title change."
Former associate athletic director Jim Donovan resigned when Frazier was hired last summer and has not been replaced. Donovan, who had applied for the AD's job after Hugh Yoshida's retirement, is now the executive director of the Hawaii Bowl. Yoshida's retirement officially begins Jan. 1.
In other athletic department matters:
>> Frazier hopes to open contract negotiations with football coach June Jones after tomorrow's Hawaii Bowl game.
"We'll sit down and talk at the end of the football season," Frazier said.
Jones' compensation package totals around $400,000 a year. He is in the fourth of a five-year contract, but last year asked to renegotiate his deal through agent Leigh Steinberg.
In addition to a salary increase for himself, Jones wanted higher pay for his assistants, weight room and other facility improvements and a plan for control of Aloha Stadium.
>> Frazier will meet with officials from Oceanic Cable and KHNL-KFVE-TV to review live Pay-Per-View of UH football games.
Issues include how much money UH made from Pay-Per-View sales, how much it cut into actual attendance, if adjustments should be made to prices, and if other sports should be offered.
"I've been told that the ratings on the rebroadcasts was astronomical," Frazier said.
>> While he was in New Orleans for the volleyball final four, Frazier worked on securing bids for the event in the future.
"Marilyn and I had some very preliminary conversations with committee members," Frazier said.
>> The athletic department has submitted a proposed budget for this fiscal year to upper campus, Frazier said. The proposal is "no more than a couple million more" than last year's budget, and is being reviewed by UH chief financial officer Wick Sloane, Frazier said.
The 2001-2002 budget (before Frazier came on board in August 2002) was $15,240,934.40. Expenses came out to $16,774,868.78. The shortfall was covered by a surplus from the previous year.
>> Alabama athletic director Mal Moore has assured Frazier that the Crimson Tide will honor their agreement to play a football game at Hawaii again next season, although coach Dennis Franchione, who left for Texas A&M, has been replaced by Mike Price.
Price quit the Washington State job for Alabama. Alabama played Hawaii last month because Washington State opted out of a game at Hawaii set for the same date.
"Alabama will absolutely play here. They're telling their recruits that right now," Frazier said.
Frazier said he and Moore are still discussing a future game at Alabama.
