Police issue composite of car-jacking suspect

Police want help identifying a gunman who robbed a tourist of his rental car in Waimanalo last month.

Police said the robbery took place in the parking lot of Mel's Market at 41-1029 Kalanianaole Highway on Oct. 29. The 42-year-old victim was waiting in his rental car for his passenger at 7:40 p.m. when a man approached the car, displayed a silver-colored handgun, and ordered him out of the car, police said. The victim complied, and the robber was last seen driving toward Makapuu, police said.

The victim returned home to San Diego and worked with police there to create a computer-generated composite of the robber, which was forwarded to Honolulu police.

The robber was described as in his early 20s, 6 feet tall, with slim build, brown eyes, and brown complexion.

Police said the weapon was likely a .45-caliber pistol. The stolen car is a 2001 gold-colored four-door Chevy Impala, license number JPU 600.
