Four powerful lady bankers will be honored Thursday night by the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii as the 2002 Women of Distinction.

The distinguished women are Bennette Evangelista, senior vice president of Central Pacific Bank; Constance Lau, president and chief executive officer of American Savings Bank; Donna Tanoue, vice chairwoman of the Bank of Hawaii and Lily Yao, vice chairwoman of First Hawaiian Bank.

Evangelista was a Girl Scout, as is her daughter, but the other three are not alumnae. Scouting is not a prerequisite, said Gail Mukaihata Hannemann, executive director of the council.

"What we're looking for is, more for women who practice the values of Girl Scouting," she said. While the women receive honors for a night, they make a longer-term commitment to the council.

Upon arrival at the $100 per person event, honorees and guests will be welcomed to the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom by a sea of scouts, who will then run the program alongside mistress of ceremonies Emme Tomimbang.

House keeping on paper

A flurry of FCC filings by a Hawaii radio operator disclosed yesterday raised questions among some industry observers about the company's plans.

In the filings Westport Conn.-based Maverick Media LLC appeared to be consolidating its radio licenses under market-specific corporate names. "All we're doing is restructuring the way the company's laid out," said President Gary Rozynek. It is not preparing to sell the stations, he said.

In Hawaii the company owns KUMU-AM 1500, KUMU-FM 94.7 and KAHA-FM 105.9 on Oahu; its Big Island stations are KHLO-AM 850 KKBG-FM 97.9, KLEO-FM 106.1 and KKOA-FM 107.7.

It plans to transfer the KUMU-AM and FM licenses to Maverick Media of Oahu License LLC; the Big Island licenses to Maverick Media of Hawaii License LLC and so on. KAHA licensee Kasa Moku Ka Pawa Inc. will not bear the Maverick moniker. Rozynek said the station was financed differently and "stands on its own for business and accounting reasons."
