Volleyball titles
still up for grabs

The prep volleyball teams that survived to get to November reach the deciding moments of their seasons this week as they seek league championships and jockey for position in the upcoming state tournaments.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs conclude tomorrow with third-place and championship matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The girls third-place match between Kalani and Pearl City starts at 2:30 p.m. The boys third-place match between Leilehua and Campbell follows at 4.

The boys title match pits defending OIA champ Pearl City against Mililani in a battle of Western Division rivals. First serve is scheduled for 5:30.

The girls championship is set for 7 with Kahuku taking on Moanalua. Kahuku won last year's OIA title, while Moanalua won the 2000 championship. Moanalua won its first meeting with Kahuku this season 15-10, 14-16, 15-12 on Oct. 10.

All of the teams playing tomorrow have secured spots in the state tournaments in Hilo.

The Iolani and Kamehameha boys teams have wrapped up the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's state tournament berths. Iolani won the first-round title and hosts Kamehameha today at 4:30 p.m. to decide the second-round champion. An Iolani win gives the Raiders their first ILH boys championship since 1981. A Kamehameha victory forces a playoff game on Friday for the overall title. The time and site of the playoff match have yet to be determined.

The second round of the ILH girls season should also clear up this week. Kamehameha qualified for the girls state tournament by winning the first round. The Warriors play at Punahou today at 5 p.m. and at Iolani on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The second round concludes Nov. 12.

Down the stretch: The OIA and ILH cross country seasons close on Saturday with league championship meets.

The ILH championships will be held at Central Oahu Regional Park, while the OIA holds its final meet at Nanakuli. Both events start at 9 a.m. The league finals lead into the Honolulu Marathon Hawaii High School Athletic Association championships set for Nov. 15 at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Wolfpack banged up: Pac-Five suffered more in last Friday's 62-7 loss to St. Louis than the Kaiser Stadium scoreboard indicated.

The game was stopped with 49 seconds remaining after a second Pac-Five player had to be taken from the field in an ambulance, but both players should be fine according to Wolfpack coach Don Botelho.

Sophomore running back Gyles Lawrence suffered a fractured fibula in the second quarter. He was taken to Straub Hospital, but returned to the stadium later in the game.

Senior quarterback Jordan Tani was also taken to Straub after suffering a dislocated left shoulder in the fourth quarter. Botelho said X-rays showed no fractures.

Tani entered the game when starting quarterback McShane Dator went down with a sprained ankle. Linebacker Sualata Siva Savini also suffered an ankle injury. Botelho said both players are questionable for Saturday's game against Damien at Aloha Stadium.

National exposure for Raiders: Iolani senior Bobby Nash is ranked 87th on ESPN.com's list of the nation's top 100 recruits. The 6-foot-6 forward verbally committed to Hawaii yesterday.

Nash and Iolani teammate Derrick Low are also featured in this month's issue of SLAM magazine.

The Raiders' all-state duo is part of a feature highlighting some of the nation's top high school players.
