Punahou graduate Ching
honored for strong game

Brown University freshman defensive back Jason Ching has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for his outstanding play in Saturday's game against Princeton.

Ching -- who graduated from Punahou this past spring and was an honorable mention All-State selection -- made five tackles, four of them unassisted, and knocked down a pass in Brown's 16-14 loss.

Ching has started four of five games for the Bears and has registered 12 tackles for the season, including 10 solo.

Seasiders hold at No. 18 in water polo

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team remains at No. 18 in this week's national rankings.

The Seasiders (10-8) received one more point (16) than last week.

BYUH hosts the Hawaiian Masters in an exhibition match on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Laie.

Carll to play in tournament

Kevin Carll of Pearl City will represent the Aloha Section PGA at the TaylorMade-adidas PGA Assistant Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Play begins today. The field includes 44 players. The winner takes home $5,000.

Warriors and Cardinals mentioned nationally

The Kamehameha and St. Joseph girls volleyball teams made this week's "Teams to Watch" list in the Student Sports Fab 50 volleyball rankings.

Both teams are undefeated in their league seasons.

Mira Costa (Calif.), which beat St. Joseph in the final of the Iolani Invitational in August, dropped out of the top 50.
