A muddy field and a hard-hitting Castle defense kept Kailua in check for the first half last night, but the Surfriders scored three touchdowns in the second half to beat the Knights 20-0 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference game.

Kailua couldn't score on its five first-half possessions and was stopped three of those times on downs. The Surfriders got as a far as Castle's 27- and the 4-yard line, and were also halted on Ethan Gonsalves' interception in the end zone.

Surfriders coach Darren Johnson, not satisfied with the 0-0 halftime score, made some second-half adjustments, and it showed on both sides of the ball.

On Kailua's second possession of the second half, Johnson called on Kealii Kalahiki, who only touched the ball twice in the first half. Kalahiki ripped off gains of 18 and 17 yards, and carried the ball nine times for 79 yards on the first scoring drive of the game. He slammed into the end zone from 2 yards out and Michael Sakaba kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

Castle's Louis Mansanas looked for running room against the Kailua defense last night.

The Kailua defense also came up big in the second half with two sacks from Cody Texeira-Vickery, a fumble recovery and interception by Sol Cuban, and interceptions by Malakai Mokofisi and Texeira-Vickery to keep Castle out of striking distance.

The Surfriders also had four sacks in the first half as quarterback Louis Mansanas Jr. paid the price on hits by Zack Meredith, Jermaine Histake, Ikaika Naki and Larry Martin.

"Our defense played tremendous football," Johnson said. "They played shutout football. And Kalahiki really stepped it up on offense. We've had some injuries to our running backs and we've had to call on him to do the job.

"And Castle is a good team," he added. "They hit real hard and they use their speed well, running to the ball."

The Knights got into the end zone once late in the game, driving on the hard running of Kawika Sebay, but Jared Suzui's 3-yard TD run was called back because of a penalty.

Two fourth-quarter interceptions, one by Cuban and one by Texeira-Vickery, led to Kailua's final two touchdowns -- runs of 5 and 2 yards by quarterback Ranson Kepa.

McKinley 29, Roosevelt 13: Junior quarterback Abel Werner threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns and added 82 yards rushing to lead the Tigers.

Michael Vasconcellos rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown for McKinley, which took a 22-0 halftime lead. Isaiah Iaea caught four passes for 62 yards, including touchdowns in the first and third quarters.

Senior quarterback Bryson Borges scored both of Roosevelt's touchdowns.
