Riley Wallace and Larry Little had planned on attending yesterday's Hawaii-BYU football game in Provo, Utah, together.

Instead, the current Hawaii basketball coach and the former Hawaii basketball coach (1976-85) spent time together in a Las Vegas hospital room following Wallace's unexpected surgery.

Wallace was listed in fair condition following yesterday's two-hour craniotomy at the University Medical Center where doctors removed two subdural hematomas from the left side of Wallace's head.

"He's doing well," said Wallace's daughter Kim Haynes, who lives in Las Vegas. "It went smoothly. He didn't watch the game and was sleeping most of the day."

The 60-year-old Wallace had been complaining of severe headaches all this week. When he awoke Thursday morning in Las Vegas, he had a bad headache, felt dizzy and had trouble standing.

His daughter drove him to the emergency room where Wallace underwent several tests. A CT scan revealed the hematomas on the left side of his brain.

Wallace was in recovery for an hour before being moved to the Intensive Care Unit around 10:15 a.m. HST. Haynes said her father was alert and spoke with family and friends, including Little, a businessman living in Las Vegas.

Wallace's wife Joan had flown to Las Vegas late Thursday night at her husband's request. She arrived yesterday morning prior to the surgery.

"He has responded well to the surgery and is doing very well," said hospital spokesman Rick Plummer. "There were no complications with the surgery."

Over the weekend, Wallace will have a tube inserted into his head to drain the excess fluid. He is expected to be released from the hospital Monday or Tuesday, and to return to Hawaii later next week.

Wallace had been scheduled to continue on to New York and Florida to meet with recruits.

Wallace is entering his 16th season this year as the Rainbows coach. Hawaii opens with an exhibition Nov. 11 against Hawaii-Hilo and takes on Cal State Fullerton in the second game of the Hawaiian Airlines Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 22.

Midnight Ohana, the Rainbows' first official practice, is scheduled for 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.
