UH ‘horrible’ in loss

CORVALLIS, Ore. >> The Hawaii Wahine put more shots on goal than Oregon State, but the Beavers put one into the goal to defeat UH 1-0 in a nonconference soccer match yesterday.

"It was a horrible game. We came out flat, played very badly in the first half and generally lacked energy. I don't know how or why," said UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing.

The Beavers won their home opener when Katie Henderson scored off a rebound from inside the penalty box at 54:36.

The play started on a shot by Morgan Crabtree.

"Number seven (Crabtree) took a really good shot, a beautifully hit ball from far out. All Mahie (Atay, UH goalkeeper) could do was knock the ball away, but we were a little sloppy on the rebound," said Tenzing.

About 12 minutes later, UH freshman striker Natasha Kai went up for a head ball against OSU goalkeeper Jo Fletcher and the result was a red card for Kai who must sit out tomorrow's game at UC Riverside.

"We were warned before the game that if you touch the goalkeeper it's an automatic yellow card. Natasha had a legitimate chance for that ball in the air," said Tenzing.

"Then their number six (OSU's Mandy Melendez who played her freshman year at Hawaii Pacific) comes in and hits Arlene (Devitt) who hits back. So the ref gives Melendez a red card and Arlene a yellow card to try and make up.

"We created better scoring chances, but we couldn't finish. The speed we are so dependent on wasn't there and we missed a penalty shot when their goalkeeper saved on Erin Quattromani."

The Wahine (1-1-1) put eight shots on goal to five for the Beavers (1-1-1), but Oregon State outshot Hawaii 18-13.

Seasiders up to 6-0 after winning twice

BELLINGHAM, Wash. >> The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team continued its great start yesterday, winning twice at the Western Washington Invitational to improve to 6-0.

The Seasiders have not lost a game this season after beating Seattle Pacific 30-15, 30-17, 30-20 and routing Cal State Stanislaus 30-9, 30-22, 30-14.

Chun Yi Lin paced the Seasiders with 29 kills in 38 attempts (.737) for the day.

Kiraly hits milestone against Metzger-Wong

LAS VEGAS >> Three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly became the first beach volleyball player to top the $3 million mark in career earnings, beating Hawaii's Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger at the Paul Mitchell AVP shootout.

Kiraly and Brent Doble beat Wong and Metzger, 21-19, 29-27, in the quarterfinal match.

Top-seeded Eric Fonoimoana and Dax Holdren then upended Hawaii's Albert Hannemann and Jeff Nygaard, 21-14, 21-17.

Shimokawa new Kaiser AD

Kaiser High School has hired Ricky Shimokawa as its new athletic director.

Shimokawa replaces Bill von Arnswaldt, who stepped down last summer to move to Nevada with his family. Bryan Almadova had been serving as interim AD since von Arnswaldt's departure.

Shimokawa was the interim AD at Kaimuki before taking the job at Kaiser.

"I'm looking forward to filling some big shoes and getting adjusted to a new school and community," Shimokawa said.
