Community cleanup

Isle Muslims to pray for 9/11 lives lost

Three Makiki churches and neighboring businesses will observe the Sept. 11 anniversary by undertaking a community cleanup.

"Kokua Makiki" day will be next Saturday. It will begin with a 9 a.m. time of prayer and remembrance at First Christian Church, 1516 Kewalo St. The neighborhood cleanup will continue from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

The project reflects the national call of the Disciples of Christ denomination asking congregations to do a service project in response to the tragedy, said the Rev. Vaughn Beckman, pastor.

"Let us honor those who died in a world where such hate can happen by changing it, starting with our own neighborhood," said Beckman.

Dong-San Christian Church and the Constitutional Free Church of Tonga are co-sponsors.

"We are inviting people of any shade, faith or culture to work side-by-side showing we believe and care about our community," Beckman said. Call 521-3500 for information.
