Seasiders Gaspar states
woman of yearBrigham Young-Hawaii's Petra Gaspar has been named the NCAA Woman of the Year for Hawaii.
The four-time first team All-American tennis player led the Seasiders to the NCAA Division II national championship last spring, and BYUH won three titles in her four years.
The NCAA will select 10 finalists from the 50 state winners next month and the Woman of the Year will be announced in November.
Gaspar, from Budapest, Hungary, will graduate from BYUH in December.
Coolen chosen by USA softball
Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen was selected to assist and help train members for the U.S. softball team."This is a very nice honor, but it is also a reflection upon our program," he said.
Coolen is one of 15 coaches chosen by the Women's National Team Selection Committee to assist U.S. head coach Mike Candrea. Candrea is Arizona's head coach.
Vulcans earn narrow victory
Sara Pilgreen had 17 kills as host Hawaii-Hilo handed Azusa Pacific its first loss of the season on Tuesday night.The Vulcans squeaked past the Cougars 28-30, 30-23, 30-15, 27-30, 15-13 in a match that lasted 2 hours, 20 minutes.
Emily Hutchinson and Cheriesse Shiroma added 11 kills apiece for the Vulcans (3-4). Shiroma also had 10 block assists.
Maria Aback paced the Cougars (5-1) with 22 kills.
Ayau canoe race set for Sept. 15
Some 50 outrigger canoes are expected for the inaugural Steinlager Henry Ayau Men's International Race, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15.The 32-mile race from Maunalua Bay to Ko Olina replaces the Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole Race on the distance schedule. The event, for nine-man teams making open water changes, starts at 9 a.m.
There are four divisions, open koa, and open, masters-35 and masters-45 fiberglass. The entry fee is $150, with some of the proceeds going to Hui Lanakila Canoe Club, which Ayau helped found in the late 1970s.
"Henry Ayau was a true Hawaiian gentleman and one of the greatest ocean athletes ever," said race director Walter Guild. "Henry was an avid canoe paddler and participated in the Skippy Race since it's inception."
