Maze offering
good deal
for college crowd

CALL IT a "Back to School Special" of sorts: Over at the Maze Nightclub in the Waikiki Trade Center, college students now get in free before midnight with a valid ID at "Nocturnal Fridays." After a hard week of hitting the books, party people 21 and over can save some money at the door and enjoy three rooms of deep house, hip-hop and progressive music.

Deejays B. McCarthy, Billy G, G-Spot, Ikon, Paul Shih and Scottie Soul will be throwing it down until 4 a.m. at the club, and the $3 Bud Light and Skyy Blue on special all night (not to mention $1 shooters) should get things off on the right foot for the weekend. Call 921-5800 for more info ...

WINDWARD RESIDENTS usually don't have as many choices on the weekends, what with Jaron's, Kaniela's and Tiare's among the only spots on that side of the island to hit for drinks and dancing. With the opening of Big City Diner, however, there's a new place to check out for live entertainment.

Located in the new Foodland Marketplace, Big City Diner Kailua captures the same vibe as its Waialae location, giving residents a place to kick back and enjoy drinks and pupus in a relaxed environment. The next few Fridays will see 'O Wai La onstage from 9:30 p.m., playing a mix of Hawaiian music ranging from '70s hits to ki ho'alu, falsetto and hula. The promoter also promises "no Jawaiian or two-chord contemporary songs," either. Sounds good to me; call 263-8822 ...

ANOTHER EVENT this weekend worth checking out is the "Windward Ho'olaulea 2002," taking place from 2 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Windward Mall. A craft fair is scheduled, and there'll be food booths and lots of activities for the keiki as well. Three stages of entertainment will feature top local acts including Keahiwai, Kapena, Na Oiwi, Maunalua and more. The Makaha Sons will even make an appearance before heading off to the Waikiki Shell that night to play at the Commodores concert. Call 235-1143 for more details on this free event ...

ASPIRING ACTORS who want to be a part of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's new movie formerly known as "Helldorado" should make plans to be at the Hawaii Film Studios (510 18th Ave.) on Monday. Open calls for extras will be held at 10 a.m. and noon, 2 and 4 p.m., with preference given to those "indigenous of the rain forest and the Amazon jungle." No experience necessary; just show up to one of the sessions and hope for the best ...
