Kahua Theatre saleBy Jason Genegabus
jason@starbulletin.comFor only the second time since moving into its location on Merchant Street in 1993, fans of plays like Ed Sakamoto's "Stew Rice," Gary Pak's "A Ricepaper Airplane," or Lee Cataluna's "Aloha Friday" will be able to purchase original playbills and posters that have been sitting in storage since the original productions.
"We have an enormous archive that a lot of these things are stored in, and they're in top shape," said Kumu Kahua spokesperson Alissa Alcosiba. She hopes "actors that once acted here and want to see their name on the playbill or poster" stop by the theater lanai Saturday to relive the glory and support Kumu Kahua's efforts to support Hawaii playwrights by continuing to produce local-themed works.
Along with the printed materials there will also be props, books, furniture, costumes, tools and other household goods that have been bought for or donated to the theater up for sale to the general public. "We've got the standard clothes, furniture (and) computer stuff," said Alcosiba. "We did have a football that was very dear to us, but it went with the director.
"I really do think we have really quality products (up for sale on Saturday). Some of the artwork we got last time, the glassware and the household products -- they're not junky stuff," she said.
Most items at the sale will have prices of under $5, except for some Kumu Kahua promotional items and baked goods. Staff will also be on hand with season brochures to answer questions about upcoming plays and give tours of the building. Almost anything left after the event will be donated to charity if not purchased.
The rummage sale starts at 7 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m., or until the last item is sold. Call 536-4222 for information and directions.
