The Chinese and
spaghetti connection

THEY say when Marco Polo returned from China, he brought noodles he found there to Italy, thus initiating the pasta now found everywhere. Well, guitarist Winston Tan is just back from a visit to China with his family, tracing their heritage, and where he's landing, they already have pasta galore. Tan will be performing on the outdoor landing at Sergio's in the Rainbow Bazaar of the Hilton Hawaiian Village where people can enjoy cocktails or dine al fresco. He begins Friday and Saturday and will play there nightly except for Sundays and Mondays when he's at the Kahala Mandarin ...

TOLEDO, Calif.: UCLA football coach Bob Toledo and his wife celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary at Lahaina's Pacific'O restaurant this week. The staff had planned to buy them a special dessert, but they begged off, claiming they were much to full. Manager Jennifer Jackson overruled Toledo, however, and brought out a tiny, miniature mousse "so they could have at least one sweet bite of fun." ... According to Giants radio broadcaster Jon Miller, State Rep. Brian Taniguchi and some others from Hawaii were at PacBell Park and made a presentation to S.F. manager Dusty Baker. Better he should have brought a doctor for hamstrung out slugger Barry Bonds ...

Honking for education?

YOU'VE doubtless heard of the Hottentots. Well, on the Big Isle they're having a "Hoot 'n' Toot" tomorrow. Folks will be lining up fronting historic Church Row Park on Mamalahoa Highway from 3:30 to 5 p.m. tomorrow and show off signs urging drivers to honk, flash lights, give a wave, show thumbs up, do a shaka or otherwise demonstrate their support of a new middle school in Waimea. Most folks are betting on a horn honk, thus the name of the rally, sponsored by State Sen. Lorraine Inouye. On Sunday there'll be a community rally for a new middle school from 1 to 4 p.m. at Kuhio Hale with lots of ono kaukau, entertainment, clowns and games ...

TILE company owner Gary Fisher is probably as tired of over-zealous airport security personnel as the rest of us, but he's now beginning to wonder if they're playing with a full deck. While lined up for inspection on a trip to a neighbor island, the inspector told him to lift up one foot at a time. "Did he really think I'd try to lift up both feet at once," asked Fisher rhetorically ... A group of Irish musicians will be playing in the back room of Murphy's Saturday from 6 p.m. An added bonus for diners or just a spot to kick back and enjoy ...

Run and Kick

BREAST-cancer survivor Indru Watumull is honorary chair for the Sept. 29 Susan G. Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure, with local attorney Cindy Goodness as the survivor chair. Indru's son, Vik, is chairing the event for the 8th year in a row and hopes to top last year's run with 5,200 entrants and $180,000 raised ... Soccer maven Jack Sullivan was thrilled with the Star-Bulletin's coverage of soccer, particularly the recent National Games held here. He said our coverage has made it possible to receive enough money to hold another $5 million tournament next year ...
