Hanalei's Keala Kennelly captured the Billabong Pro title yesterday for the second year in a row at Teahupoo, Tahiti. Kennelly carves to
Tahiti triumphShe defeated four-time and reigning Association of Surfing Professionals world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in the final heat.
Kennelly jumped from 13th to fifth in the ASP World Championship Tour ratings, and she earned $10 000 for her victory. Kennelly also won the event in 2000.
The Billabong Pro is the third event on the women's 2002 tour.

Smith is 5,000 champ in Occidental meet
Hawaii's Cheryl Smith ran to victory in the 5,000 meters yesterday at the Occidental Invitational in Los Angeles.Smith finished in 17 minutes, 14.54 seconds, more than 27 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
UH's Casey McGuire-Turcotte ran to a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters. She finished in 4:35.58, a little more than nine second behind winner Tiffany Burgess of UCLA.
Hawaii's Sadie Martin was third in the javelin with a toss of 118 feet, while teammate Olivia Smoody earned third in the women's high jump with a leap of 5-1.
UH's Nicole Kaffka was third in the long jump (17-4 1/4), while Lana Phillips finished fourth in the long jump (16-2 1/4) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.17 seconds).
