UH to honor 14 greatest
Wahine athletes at banquet



The University of Hawaii will honor 14 of its greatest female athletes at the 30th Anniversary Rainbow Wahine Celebration Dinner Thursday, May 2, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom.

The keynote speaker will be Maureen O'Toole, a former Wahine swimmer who captained the 2000 U.S. women's Olympic water polo team that won the silver medal in Sydney. Also honored will be former women's athletic director, Dr. Donnis Thompson, who started the women's program in 1972.

The names of the top athletes have not been announced but the list includes three volleyball players, and one each from basketball, cross country, diving, golf, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and water polo. Four long-time Wahine coaches will also be recognized: Jim Schwitters (tennis), Wally Nakamoto (diving), Johnny Faerber (cross country) and Dave Shoji (volleyball).

Navarro to join Viloria in May 17 fight

When Brian Viloria returns to the Blaisdell Arena on May 17, he won't be coming back alone. With him will be Olympic teammate and current junior bantamweight star Jose Navarro, who will compete in an eight-round bout against an unnamed opponent.

California's Navarro is 10-0 with four knockouts and has notched more victories than any of his 2000 Olympic teammates, The junior bantemweight showed his power last week, knocking out Adrian Cuevas with a single right hook at 2:03 of the fourth round.

Viloria won't be the only local boy fighting on the card, either.

Eric Alexander of Kaneohe will take on the Phillipines' Jerry Balagbagan (9-2, 8 KO's) in a six-round bout on the undercard. Alexander, 31, has not fought in three years, when he knocked out Otilio Villareal in six rounds.

He was 17-3 with 13 knockouts in his career, with 15 of the wins coming in Honolulu.

He won the Hawaii state welterweight title in 1995 with a 12-round decision over Erwin Villaver and took over the vacant NBA welterweight title before retiring.

The co-main event features junior welterweights Lovemore Ndou (30-4, 22 KOs) and Jun Gorres (25-2-1, 22 KOs). Three more bouts will be added to the card later.

Vulcans rout Tigers for baseball victory

Hawaii-Hilo pounded Pacific 9-1 yesterday in Stockton, Calif.

Daniel Lockett blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to help the Vulcans break a 1-1 tie. Hilo ended any doubt about the outcome with a five-run ninth inning.

Jason Castro picked up the win for the Vulcans (10-35-1), pitching a five-hitter with seven strikeouts.

The Vulcans and Tigers (18-16-1) meet again today.

Murphy's to host auction for Coaches vs. Cancer

Murphy's Bar &Grill and the American Cancer Society will hold a final party of the season for the Hawaii basketball program April 25, and help raise money for the Coaches vs. Cancer Auction.

The event is from 6-9 p.m. at Murphy's, located downtown at the corner of Merchant and Nuuanu streets. Festivities include a live and silent auction, live music by the Mickey AlaTrio, pupus and a hosted bar.

Tickets are $35 ($20 of which is tax deductible) and can be purchased at Murphy's or by calling the American Cancer Society at 595-7544.

Free parking is available at the Bank ofHawaii lot located on the opposite corner from Murphy's.

Auction items include round-trip tickets for two to the West Coast, hotel packages from the California Hotel and Casino and the Main Street Hotel in Las Vegas and autographed sports memorabilia.

Money raised from the auction will go to support patient programs and services in Hawaii and research provided by the American Cancer Society.
