Prosecution takes over
Padayao death case

Star-Bulletin staff

The probe into the hit-and-run death of Honolulu police officer Dannygriggs Padayao is in the hands of the Honolulu prosecutor's office.

HPD traffic investigators forwarded the case to the prosecutor's office last month, said Capt. Bryan Wauke, HPD Traffic Division.

Spokesman Jim Fulton confirmed the prosecutor's office has received the case.

Padayao, 46, died April 30 when he was struck by a pickup truck as he was laying flares on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch to direct traffic around an accident scene.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man for driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent homicide and failure to render aid.

The Michigan man had been visiting relatives for about two weeks when he was arrested. He returned to Michigan after police released him but promised to return to face prosecution, the attorney for his relatives said.
