Wood Craft

By Ben Wood

Hard fall kept Wood Craft
on the sidelines for weeks

Wood Craft has not appeared in its Saturday spot since Feb. 2 because on Feb. 1, walking toward the Blaisdell Concert Hall with Margaret Murchie to attend "La Traviata," I slipped on a wet walkway and came down on the point of my left shoulder. An ambulance rushed me to Queen's Emergency Room. It was a busy night in the ER. To attract attention my way, Margaret spotted a priest and hollered, "Hey Father, come over here and give this guy the last rites." Even though the pain was killing me, I had to laugh. Dr. Daniel Singer inserted a prosthesis in the shoulder/arm on Feb. 9. I have been taking physical therapy three times a week at SportsMedicine Hawaii under Pat Ariki and his staff of well-trained young men and women. My niece Kaina Awaa and friends such as Tita Morrison, Alice Lombardo, Jan Diehl and Mihana Souza provided much help with food and transportation. Others who assisted me were Carole Brooks, Ruth Ann Becker, Gina Schultz, Barbara Campbell, Denise Crosby, Yoshiko "Maria" Iida, Mariese Montano-Smith and Dolly Lamphere. My barber of more than 30 years, Salon Etc. owner Sue Fujii Hill, who is recovering from a hip replacement, came to my home and cut my hair. I tell friends I'm lucky I didn't come down on my head. You can imagine the wisecracks, that followed ...

FIRING ON: Before moving to Hana, Carl "Linky" Lindquist lived in Honolulu. He and his late partner, Don Over, earned a legendary reputation for outrageously creative practical jokes. A number of them involved a 300-pound black torpedo that was originally given to Linky as a Christmas gift by Ted Sturdivant. When Ted recently became a first-time father, Linky flew in from Hana to take him to lunch. As the valets brought their cars around, Ted discovered his car had been transformed into the "Torpedo Diaper Service," complete with signs on both doors and the familiar torpedo, now emblazoned with the motto, "We Sink The Big Ones," firmly attached to the roof ...

Bruce, Demi and the kids

Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and their kids had Easter dinner at Roy's Hawaii Kai with a group of 16 people, eight children and eight adults. Owner Roy Yamaguchi was in the open kitchen. The dress was casual. Willis is staying at a luxury home on Hawaii Loa Ridge while filming here. Isle model-actress Tina Kasuya is happy to be the double for the female lead in the picture ...

BACK when it was announced Shari Lynn had the title role in "Mame" at Diamond Head Theatre, I bumped into DHT's John Rampage and told him Shari was going to be a great Mame. John agreed whole-heartedly. Shari did not let us down. She is a perfect Mame. The show, closing April 14, is a delight. Helping make it a winner are strong performances by Kanoa Goo, Wisa D'Orso, Zenia Zambrano and Gary Masuoka. The big dance numbers are outstanding ...

T&C features Burns' villa

Town & Country, on the cover of its April issue, calls the Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli, developed by former Kahala Hilton GM Robert "Bob" Burns, "Italy's best new hotel." The impressive 10-page layout has large photos of the beautiful property. The story traces Bob's career and calls him a "world-class hotelier" ...
