Board of Water Supply urges
residents to check for water leaks

Star-Bulletin staff

Oahu residents are urged to check for leaks in their plumbing fixtures as part of the 12th annual Detect-A-Leak Week program through Saturday.

Clifford Jamile, manager and chief engineer of the Board of Water Supply, said, "There have been instances when a customer paid hundreds of dollars on water and sewer bills, over a period of time, before a property leak was discovered."

"When you have a leak, the money you pay for water goes down the drain," Jamile said.

Officials of the Board of Water Supply are working with Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, the Sierra Club and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii to urge Oahu water users to check their plumbing fixtures and to repair them quickly.

Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki has donated 20,000 toilet leak detection dye tablets and will contact other hotels to remind them to conduct regular leak checks.

Thousands of fliers and toilet leak detection dye tablets will be distributed to city and state employees. Print advertisements and radio announcements will occur throughout the week to remind consumers to examine their water fixtures. Other Detect-A-Leak Week activities:

>> Free leak detection dye tablets will be available at all satellite city halls and in the lobby of the Board of Water Supply at 630 S. Beretania St.

>> Entry forms for 50 free leak checks by the Board of Water Supply are available to single-family homeowners, to be mailed in before March 9. Entry forms can be found in all Detect-A-Leak Week advertisements and on the announcement flyer. Officials will select 50 names and schedule a follow-up appointment to go to the resident's home to investigate the property for leaks.

Water consumers who would like to conduct their own leak inspection can call 527-6124 and ask for free publications on water conservation and how to check for leaks.
