NEW SHANGHAI CIRCUS
Leeward Community College hosts acrobats from China.

Chinese acrobats set
to fly at LCC

Gravity simply does not seem to apply to the New Shanghai Circus.

The troupe of acrobats performs Chinese circus acts dating back to harvest festivals more than 2,000 years ago, which means balancing, body-manipulating and juggling feats that challenge belief.

The New Shanghai Circus brings "Incredible! Acrobats of China" to Leeward Community College Theatre tomorrow through Saturday.

Shows are at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The acrobats have performed on Broadway to standing-room-only audiences at the New Victory Theater. Last year, PBS broadcast their performance live.

Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for students, seniors and active military, and $20 for children under 12. Reserved seating is available for an extra fee. Call 455-0385 or 455-0388.

One-time cattle rancher Howard Lyman is now a dedicated vegan.

‘Mad Cowboy’ spreads
word on vegan diets

Howard Lyman has no objection to being called "mad," in fact that's the title he's given himself -- the Mad Cowboy. Mad as in angry about mad cow disease and determined to spread the word about its dangers.

Lyman, a fourth-generation cattle rancher, is now an avowed vegan, author of "Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat."

He will speak about his beliefs in organic, plant-based diets Saturday at Honolulu Central Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 2313 Nuuanu Ave., and Sunday at Maui Community College. Both talks begin at 7 p.m.

Lyman gained notoriety when he and Oprah Winfrey were sued by the Texas Cattlemen's Association over critical statements about the beef industry Lyman made on Winfrey's television show in 1996. Both he and Winfrey were eventually cleared of all charges.

"Sure, I used to enjoy my steaks as much as the next guy," Lyman says in "Mad Cowboy." "But if you knew what I know about what goes into them and what they can do to you, you'd probably be a vegetarian like me. And believe it or not, as a pure vegetarian now who consumes no animal products at all, I can tell you that these days I enjoy eating more than ever."

Admission to Lyman's talk is free; free food samples will be distributed. For information call the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, 944-8344, or visit the society's Web site, www.vsh.org.
