On my way into First Hawaiian Bank, I saw a newspaper carrier with a bundle under his arm. My eyes immediately focused on the masthead: "Honolulu Star-Bulletin." Brushes with the nearly famous
Sigh of relief.
"Hey, Star-Bulletin!" I said and he smiled and stopped. "Yeah, I work there." We chatted for awhile about the new heavier newsprint we're using and the heavy insert inside a recent edition.
Somehow, the sunny day seemed sunnier.
He asked me my name, and he told me his. As it turns out, he's a brother of the guys in the Brothers Cazimero musical group.
Later, inside the bank, one teller said, "I just helped a famous golfer" to the teller helping me. Curious, I asked the name.
"David Ishii," she said. "I've never heard of him, but someone told me that he's really famous here in Hawaii."
"Oh yeah," I said, "He's not Tiger Woods famous, but he's good, one of the best ever from Hawaii."
The smiling teller walked away, wishing she had gotten Ishii's autograph. The other teller said, kiddingly, "You probably already did -- on the signed check."
Small universe, eh?
