Mary Poole of Kailua spotted Aloha Hair Care while visiting Granite City, Ill., near St. Louis. Sandy Anderson, above, is the owner and made a couple of trips to Hawaii, the last in 1965. She opened a beauty shop in 1967 and named it Aloha so she would "always feel close to the islands." The Hawaiian theme is carried out inside the shop with Hawaiian calendars on the walls. Calling the shop Aloha has the added benefit of being near top of the listings in the phone book, Anderson said.
