Mililani captured the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer title last night, beating Kalaheo on penalty kicks after 80 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtime periods for a 1-0 victory. Trojans take OIA on penalty kicks
By Nick Abramo
nabramo@starbulletin.comThe Trojans were the aggressor most of the night and they passed the ball brilliantly, but couldn't find the net.
The Mustangs stayed right in it with some tough defense, led by Tonya McBride, who successfully used a man-to-man defense on prolific Mililani scorer Mele French.
"Yes, I'm surprised it went this far (to penalty kicks)," Mililani coach James Uson said. "And it was frustrating to see that we were getting opportunities, but it just wouldn't go in."
Uson put plenty of emphasis on penalty kicking during practice for the postseason and it paid off. The Trojans won the penalty kick fight 4-2, as Ashlee Doi booted home the game-clincher. Two Kalaheo penalty shots missed the net completely. Julie Broussard, Jolie Nitta and Liane Tom also scored on penalty kicks for the Trojans. Kalaheo's two penalty-goal scorers were Lindsey Peck and Tina Garcia.
"We were thrilled to get that far (penalty kicks)," Kalaheo coach Alan Heu said. "Mililani is a very good team and it's an accomplishment for us to have kept up with them."
Heu said his team practiced penalty kicks, but "unfortunately we didn't get the breaks."
