Kauai County faces
complaint of buried waste

The state Health Department has filed a complaint against Kauai County for burying about 20 lead acid batteries in a vacant lot across the street from its Hanapepe transfer station.

The county dug up the batteries and other non-hazardous wastes and sent the materials for proper disposal after the incident was discovered during an inspection on May 8, 2001, the Health Department said.

State law prohibits their disposal of lead acid batteries.

The Kauai Department of Public Works has 20 days to respond to the DOH order. The county could be fined $31,000 for hazardous waste violations.

Man allegedly shoots 2 women, forces standoff

A seven-hour standoff outside a Ko Olina resort ended early yesterday when a man who allegedly shot two women gave himself up.

The man, 23, had recently broken up with one of the women, police said. All three were from the Leeward Coast.

The standoff took place on a Pro Bowl practice field on the Waianae side of the Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa, police said. Police closed Aliinui Drive, which leads to the resort and to nearby homes.

Police said the incident began around 9 p.m. Friday. The two women, both 21, encountered the man at the Nanakuli Fastop at 87-2130 Farrington Highway, where he entered their car and threatened himself with a gun, police said.

Police said the women sought help at the gas station after the man had driven away. They ended up at the resort after the suspect rammed their car from behind near the Kahe power plant and tried to push them off the road.

The suspect fired at them along the roadway and again while they were trying to get help from guards at the resort, hitting both women, police said.

The suspect fired again when the women went into the hotel for help. The man's former girlfriend was shot in the wrist and was taken to Queen's Medical Center; the other woman suffered a grazing wound to her arm and was treated at the scene and released, police said.

Queen's did not comment yesterday on the woman's condition.

The gunman surrendered to police around 5 a.m. yesterday and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police search for suspects after woman robbed in car

A woman waiting to pick up her friend along Sierra Drive Friday morning was allegedly driven several blocks against her will by an intruder and robbed.

Police yesterday were looking for two male suspects. One of the men allegedly got into the woman's car at 4342 Sierra Drive, shoved the woman into the passenger seat and drove away. They were followed by a car driven by a second suspect, police said.

The alleged intruder stopped the car at 16th Avenue and Koko Drive and took the woman's purse and car keys.

Both suspects fled the scene in the car driven by the second suspect.

The incident occurred just before 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Alleged shoplifter cuts agent's hand during chase

A loss prevention agent at an Ala Moana Boulevard retail establishment was cut on the hand Friday trying to stop a suspected shoplifter.

Two agents observed a 46-year-old man "concealing items on his person" and stopped him after he left the store without paying for them, police said.

The suspect ran but was captured after a short chase. He then allegedly cut one of the agents with a sharp instrument.

The suspect was subdued and arrested. The agent suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene, police said. Drug paraphernalia containing what appeared to be a small amount of drugs was recovered from the suspect, investigators said.
