"Kapono & the Turtle" by Edie Bikle, illuistrated by Connie Hennings Chilton (Island Heritage, $10.99)A teenager in ancient Hawaii rescues a sea turtle, and later the turtle returns the favor. This is a classic plot, handsomely illustrated by Hennings-Chilton. It's also a fable, not anthropology -- a kid in ancient Hawaii finding a sea turtle would be just as likely to ring the dinner bell as set it loose.
"Hawaiian National Bibliography, 1780-1900, Volume 3: 1851-1880" compiled and annotated by David W. Forbes (University of Hawaii Press and Hordern House, $120)
This third volume -- with more to come -- of Hawaiiana extracts prior to 1900 is a massive, long-needed piece of scholarship by a master compiler of arcane footnotery.
This is useful scholarship, and worth every penny raised for its publication. Despite the weightiness, it's also entertaining. Among its contents: a signed confession by Albert Hicks, a notorious rogue and piratical whale killer. He notes that while in Honolulu in 1845, he "engaged in every kind of wickedness; I robbed and beat the natives, and was finally taken by the authorities and locked up until the vessel was ready for sea ..."
