All-star commits to Wahine

The Hawaii women's basketball team received a verbal commitment yesterday from Amy Sanders, a guard/wing player who is attending Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., this year.

Sanders was an all-Sunset League performer for Huntington Beach High School her sophomore and junior years and was a first-team, all-California Interscholastic Federation selection last year.

She was being recruited by San Diego, San Francisco and Wyoming, but canceled recruiting trips to the first two after visiting Hawaii recently.

"The distance was my major concern because I'm from a really close family," Sanders said.

That concern disappeared after her trip here.

"UH has such a really good program. I liked the coaches and the girls and they play an unbelievable schedule. They play UConn my freshman year," Sanders said.

She has been an honor roll student every year in high school and plans to major in special education at the elementary level.
