State schedules hearings on near-shore fisheries

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has planned three public hearings this month to amend three rules and to create two new fisheries management areas on Kauai.

The main purposes of the proposed rule changes are to better manage the akule fishery statewide and to allocate resources among competing user groups at Nawiliwili, Port Allen and Hanamaulu Bay on Kauai.

The hearings will held:

>> Wailuku: 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Lihikai School cafeteria.

>> Mililani: 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Kipapa Elementary School cafeteria.

>> Lihue: 5:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Wilcox Elementary School auditorium.

Those unable to attend the public comment hearings or who want to present additional comments may mail written testimony by Oct. 10 to the Division of Aquatic Resources, 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 330, Honolulu 96813.

More information or a copy of the proposed rule changes will be mailed at no charge by request. Call Aquatic Resources: Oahu, 587-0100; Kauai, 274-3344; and Maui, 243-5249.

Laser Eye Institute takes up new spot in Pan Am Building

The Laser Eye Institute of Hawaii has moved to new offices in the Pan Am Building to expand its operation.

It has a second laser room, new testing and diagnostic equipment, the Orbscan corneal mapping system and new Visx Star 3 excimer laser with three-dimensional tracking. The Visx ActiveTrak technology follows eye movements during laser vision surgery.

The institute, headed by Dr. Jack Melton, has performed more than 8,000 laser vision procedures in Honolulu.

More than 125 optometrists and ophthalmologists send patients to the institute and are involved in the procedure with patients from diagnostics to follow-up care.

"Patients are ecstatic after the procedure," Melton said. "Every member of my family who has needed corrective vision, including myself, has had the procedure."

The Laser Eye Institute of Hawaii is a member of Laser EyeNet, a nationwide network of optometrists and ophthalmologists who have access to the latest technological advances in laser vision corrections.

Its new offices are on the ground floor, 1600 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 105.

6 Oahu parks switching to 6:45 p.m. closure time

Park gates will close at 6:45 p.m. every day, due to shorter daylight hours.

Park gates open at 7 a.m. year round. The earlier closing time reflects Department of Land and Natural Resource's annual winter schedule.

Affected parks are: Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area in Aiea, Malaekahana State Recreation Area in Kahuku, Puu Ualakaa State Wayside in Makiki, Sand Island State Recreation Area and Waahila Ridge State Recreation Area in Honolulu, and Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area.

The summer schedule for gate closing will resume on Monday, April 1, 2002. For more information, call the Division of State Parks at 587-0300.

Kuakini Medical Center seeking adult volunteers

Adult volunteers are sought for patient care and nonpatient services at Kuakini Medical Center.

Those in the patient care area will assist in discharging patients, help feed patients, read to them and provide companionship.

Those preferring to work in other areas could answer phones, file, do light typing and basic data entry, assist with food preparation, help in the gift shop or greet visitors.

Shifts are flexible and available at different times and days.

Training will be provided by Kuakini's Volunteer Services Department. Applicants must be able to work at least one shift per week and provide evidence of a negative two-step tuberculosis clearance.

Volunteers become part of the Kuakini Auxiliary, the largest hospital auxiliary in Hawaii. For more information or to volunteer, call 547-9184.
