Hawaii's Own
Benny Agbayani, Mets: When the St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus was told that he had been claimed on waivers, he joked around the clubhouse about how much he looked forward to New York's trip to San Diego tomorrow so that he could catch up with his "old friends" on the Mets.Little did he know, he is still with the same club, but not hitting nearly as well as he had before the rumors started flying.
That San Diego was interested in Agbayani was never in doubt, and tomorrow may be a good time to impress his potential new employers.
If they were watching the outfielder's performance in a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, they may still need some selling on him.
Agbayani still has not regained the stroke he had before being benched last week, going hitless in two at-bats but earning a walk. Agbayani has hit just a single in his last 11 at-bats, but has only struck out once in the span and walked twice.
Agbayani is just three strikeouts away from equalling the season high of 68 he set last year, but is still 27 walks behind his season's best of 54, also set last year.
Mike Fetters, Pirates: When the Iolani graduate went to Pittsburgh, manager Lloyd McClendon told him he would have the closer role, with Josias Manzanillo there to back him up and learn from him.
Fetters stayed in the bullpen in the ninth inning and cheered on his student yesterday, as the Bucs beat the Padres 7-6.
Fetters has not pitched in three straight days, and judging by yesterday's slight will only be called upon in save situations, when he is a perfect 2-0 since joining Pittsburgh.
