A summer spent playing baseball in historic Newport, R.I., proved an enjoyable experience for Doug Jackson and Kainoa Obrey.

The Iolani graduates and soon-to-be juniors at Brigham Young University helped the Newport Gulls win the American Division title in the 10-team New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Obrey won the league's 10th Player Award, given to the player who contributed the most while not playing a regular position the majority of the season. He was named to the 2001 NECBL All-Star team, All-American Division team, All-League team, and NECBL All-Star team that played the Cape Cod League All-Stars, July 28.

Jackson finished fifth in the batting title race with a .328 average and led the league with three triples.

He was tied for third with 28 runs scored and was among the hit leaders with 41. A center fielder, Jackson knocked in 20 runs in 35 games.
