Metzger andWong win
pair of matches on FIVB tour

Hawaii's duo of Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong advanced through the first day of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Tour in Austria yesterday.

The four other men's teams from the United States also advanced.

Metzger and Wong were the top performing team for the Association of Volleyball Professionals during men's pool play.

The local pair won both of their matches yesterday, beating Djordje Ljubicic and Michael Slean of Canada, 21-17, 21-12 and Satoshi Watanabe and Katsuhiro Shiratori of Japan, 21-14, 1-21, 15-12.

Play continues today in the event that's considered on par with the Olympics.

Hawaii golf team falls into tie for fifth place

Team Hawaii dropped from second to a tie for fifth during yesterday's third round of the 2001 Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in Flagstaff, Ariz., with a total of 432, some seven strokes off the pace.

Tony Okano Sr. continues to shoot the best on the three-man team that also includes Jim Seki Jr. and Parker McLachlin.

Okano Sr.'s three-day total of 217 is seven strokes back of leader Travis Johnson, of Southern California. Seki has a three-day total of 219. McLachlin is another three shots back at 222.

Team Southern California Blue leads the tournament with a 425 total. Second-round leader Team Oregon is one stroke back.

Applications available for women's tournament

The USGA Women's Mid-Amateur qualifying tournament is August 30th at Mid-Pacific C.C. Amateur women 25 years or older with a 9.4 handicap index or less can apply. Entries need to be in by August 8th. The Championship will be a Fox Run Golf Club, Eureka, Mo., October 6-11, 2001. Entry forms are out and can be downloaded from the usga.org website or call Kathy Ordway 262-2428 or ordwayk001@hawaii.rr.com.

Vulcan season volleyball tickets up for grabs

Season tickets for the University of Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team are available at the Vulcan athletic ticket office.

Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $10 for senior citizens.

Vulcan coach Sharon Peterson opens her 23rd season against St. Martin's College on Aug. 29. Hilo begins practice on Aug. 8.

The University of Hawaii-Hilo athletic department is offering a Vulcan All-Sports Pass for the upcoming school year. Passes are $75 for adults, $30 for faculty and staff, and $10 for students.

The passes are good for general admission to Vulcan volleyball, basketball and baseball games. It also includes admission to the Hawaiian Style Classic volleyball tournament, and the Big Island Invitational and Coconut Coast Classic basketball tournaments.

The pass is not valid for NCAA postseason events hosted by UHH. For more information, call 974-7606 (Big Island).

2nd annual Rainbow Run slated for Aug. 25

The Naval Computer and Telecommunication Area Master Station Pacific Chief Petty Officer's Association will be holding the second annual Rainbow Run on August 25 at Neil Blaisdell Park. There will be a keike run of one mile, and three- and five-mile runs.

Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Shriner's Children's Hospital. Applications can be found in the Hawaii Race magazine. Packet pickup will be August 23 from 2-6 p.m. at Tom's Golf Shop 1640A Wilikina.

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 1-for-3, scored a run and drove one in. He was also caught trying to steal second base.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate did not pitch in Pittsburgh's 3-0 loss to San Francisco.

Brandon Villafuerte, Rangers: The Hilo native pitched a perfect inning of relief in Texas' 12-2 win over New York. He has not given up a hit in 2 1/3 innings this season.
