Editor’s Scratchpad

The sound of
two hands clapping

Applause is in order for neighbors for who they are and what they have done.

>> Diane Yukihiro Chang, former editor of these pages in the Star-Bulletin, who has been honored by the state House of Representatives for using "her talents to uplift the status of women" in Hawaii.

>> Davis Yogi, confirmed by the Senate Labor Committee as director of the Human Resources Department. As chief negotiator with several unions, he has won praise from both sides for his integrity.

>> For 1,200 teen-agers who have taken part in a grueling week of military training as members of Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps. In a day when teen-agers are often targets of criticism, their energy and spirit was exemplary.

>> Last but most assuredly not least, Chad Rowan, who tips in at a neat 510 pounds, honored by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell for "fair play and sportsmanship" as a grand champion of sumo in Japan. Although Rowan, whose ring name was Akebono, has become a Japanese citizen to continue his association with sumo, one suspects his heart is still in Waimanalo.
