Numbah 7 day of Christmas . . .
Photograph and Commentary by Dennis Oda, Star-Bulletin
How was I going to photograph "seven shrimp a-swimmin'?"
People suggested different food places where live shrimp were
kept. But that thought lingered in my mind for only five seconds.
When I think of shrimp, I think of EATING! How about seven
shrimp a-swimmin' in hot cooking oil. Or better yet, seven
cooked shrimp a-swimmin' in a special Christmas sauce. I
called one of the premier chefs in Hawaii, Hiroshi Fukui at
L'Uraku Restaurant, and told him about my idea. He said
he had the perfect tempura batter (it's actually arare or rice
flakes) that's brightly colored red and green. I watched as
the seven shrimp went a-swimmin' in that hot oil ... then
saw those seven shrimp a swimmin' in Fukui's special
Christmas sauce ... then I felt those seven shrimp
a-swimmin' in my stomach.
For a bit of holiday cheer, the Star-Bulletin is counting down the 12 Days of Christmas. Daily through Dec. 23, a staff photographer will present the gift item of the day, as named in the local version of the song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas." We've taken liberties and are doing a pre-Christmas countdown, starting with the 12th-day gift and ending with the "numbah-one day" gift. Today we present: 7 shrimps a-swimming. Or, as the song goes: "Numbah 7 day of Christmas, my tutu give to me, 7 shrimp a-swimmin' ..."
