Manoa reigns If the University of Hawaii-Manoa men's basketball team plays like it did in the first half yesterday afternoon, coach Riley Wallace predicts a Crum-my start to the regular season Friday.

Star-BulletinThe Rainbows could afford a sluggish beginning in its 91-64 exhibition victory over Division II UH-Hilo as 2,503 watched at the Stan Sheriff Center.
But UH-Manoa opens against Louisville just four days from now. And the Vulcans have little in common with coach Denny Crum's Cardinals other than the color of their uniforms.
"Mentally we have to come ready to play," Wallace said. "If it was Louisville tonight we'd have been down a ton of points."
It wasn't quite 2,000 pounds, but Hilo led, 18-9, seven minutes into the game. At the outset, the Vulcans were inspired and quick to the hoop, while the Rainbows were sluggish and seemingly puzzled by Hilo's zone defense.
Manoa eventually woke up with point-a-minute scoring by post Troy Ostler (24 in 22 minutes) and wing Predrag Savovic (17 in 15).
An eight-point Rainbow run to start the second half made it 47-37, Manoa, and the hosts' depth made a Vulcans' comeback nearly unthinkable.
"At the end of the first half I was cautiously optimistic. But I knew Riley would get into those guys and they'd make adjustments," Hilo coach and former Manoa assistant Jeff Law said. "Troy Ostler, big time. Predrag Savovic, big time. Take those two guys out, we can compete."
Newcomer Rickey Terrell, a junior college transfer, started at point guard for the Rainbows for the first time. He earned mixed reviews from Wallace.
"He did some good things, but he still tries to do too much with the ball," the coach said.
Terrell said he needs to recognize defenses better; that was evident as the Rainbows had trouble early attacking the Vulcans' zone.
Hilo left Terrell wide open for jumpers several times, but he resisted temptation."We had guys open on the weakside, so I must have passed up six or seven shots. I wanted to shoot them, but as a point guard you think pass first," he said.
Wallace wants the Rainbows to think defense first, and he was unhappy with the overall first-half effort, but also credited Hilo.
"They outhustled us. They showed great quickness and executed their offense well and shot off the dribble," Wallace said. "We were not containing the ball. They were going north-south, we tell our guys they've got to make them go east-west."
Forward Stanley Ibia didn't need a map to find the basket. He led Hilo with 14 points, but only 5 came after intermission.
"It seemed like in the second half we were a step too slow on the loose balls and rebounds," Ibia said.
After Hilo's initial rush, Ostler dominated the court most the time he was on it -- often making it look simple. He knows things will be different Friday.
"We can't come out and struggle like we did tonight," he said. "We need to play 40 minutes of pure basketball."
