Deep-shooting
Sea Warriors prevail
in exhibition

Nash Subotic scored 24 points and fellow Hawaii Pacific newcomer Dragon Karanovic had 23, leading the Sea Warriors to a 99-77 exhibition basketball victory over the Northwest All-Stars last night at Blaisdell Arena.

Subotic and Karanovic, 6-foot-5 forwards from Yugoslavia and Germany, respectively, combined to hit 9 of 17 shots from 3-point range. The Sea Warriors made 14 of 30 treys overall.

Antonio Manns led the All-Stars with 19 points.

Friis, Jorris set pace

Christian Friis won the Val Nolasco Memorial Half-Marathon run yesterday at Kapiolani Park. Heather Jorris was the first woman across the finish line.

Friis ran the distance in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 23 seconds, beating out runner-up Jonathan Lyau by 31 seconds.

Jorris was clocked in 1:25:16. Teresa Condron finished second among the women at 1:31:14.

Kozowyk mountain king

Stephen Kozowyk won yesterday's 6th Mountainman Triathlon yesterday, finishing the course at Kualoa Ranch in 1 hour, 30 minutes and 58 seconds.

Donnie Arnoult was some four minutes back (1:35:03) for second place in the event that included a 500-meter swim, 20-kilometer mountainbike ride and 5-kilometer trail run.

The women's winner was Lindsay Price, who finished in 1:45:27. Tina Eakin was second in 1:48:39.

Cliff Rigsbee competed in two legs of the team relay- the swim and run - as he and John Eric Greene finished as the team winner in 1:35:31.

Cross country champs

Kamehameha's Justin Peterson and St. Francis' Annie Kawasaki won the boys and girls individual titles in the HHSAA Honolulu Marathon State Cross Country Championships at Hawaii Preparatory Academy on the Big Island Saturday.

Peterson finished the 3-mile course in a time of 17:35, 20-seconds faster than second-place finisher Todd Iacovelli of Punahou. Kamehameha's J.B. Boison finished third at 18:11.

Kawasaki battled King Kekaulike's Chandi Bickford to the end but Kawasaki finished ahead by three seconds winning with a time of 13:26. Bickford finished second and Hawaii Prep's Cobey Ackerman finished third with a time of 13:31. The girls run a 2-mile course.

For the fourth straight year the Kamehameha boys won the team title. Seabury Hall finished a distant second while Hawaii Prep finished third.

The Punahou girls successfully defended their team title. The Buffanblu have won the team title five of the last six years. Iolani finished second while Hawaii Prep finished third.

Silver to Tong

Hawaii's Amy Tong, who competed in the Sydney Olympics, finished second yesterday at the 2000 Pan American Judo Junior Senior Championships at Kissimmee, Fla.

Tong finished second to Canada's Amy Cotton in the 78-kilogram weight class.

San Francisco's Baker at baseball camp

San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Baker, named National League Manager of the Year last week, headlines the staff of the 2000 Hawaii Winter Baseball Camp Dec. 2-3 at Rainbow Stadium.

The camp, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, is open to players age 13 to 18. The cost is $125 and includes lunch.

The registration deadline is Nov. 20.

Staff members include Carlos Alfonso, Sonny Jackson, Juan Lopez, Ron Wotus, Lenn Sakata and Pat Dobson.

Pick up applications at McCully Bicycle, Long John Silvers/A&W and at the Hawaii Winter Baseball office, 905 Makahiki Way.

Hans L'Orange celebration

The Hans L'Orange Baseball Park Council will host the second annual Plantation Hekka Cook-Off this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hawaii's Plantation Village in the Waipahu Cultural Garden Park.

Among the highlights will be the unveiling of the long-awaited book on the history of the baseball park - "Hans L'Orange Field: Common Ground, Uncommon Glory, 1924-1999," written to commemorate the park's 75th anniversary last year.

Hans L'Orange managed the Oahu Sugar Company in Waipahu from 1937 until he retired in 1957.

There will be food booths, live entertainment, children's games and a Whiffle Ball home run contest.

Tennis award winners

The USTA Hawaii Pacific Section announced its annual award winners during a tennis weekend at Maui's Kapalua Resort.

The winners are:

Jim Howe Sportsmanship Award: Bradlee Lum-Tucker (Kauai) and Jan Ikeda (Maui).

Family of the Year Award: Ray Hasegawa family (Hilo).

Member Club of the Year Award: Kailua Community Tennis Association.

Presidents Award: Shirley Kagawa (Hilo) and Tamotsu Tanaka (Oahu).

Special Service Award: Jane Sakakihara (Maui) and George and Mabel Tom (Oahu).

District Service Awards: Joanne Sato (East Hawaii), Bev Yamauchi (West Hawaii), Shelly Konishi (Kauai), John Umeno (Maui), Stephanie Nakamura and George Asato (Oahu).

Junior golf get-together

The Oahu Junior Golf Association will hold a meeting Dec. 6 to discuss the 2001 season.

Information will be available on the player's tour, the development program and registration requirements.

The meeting is at the Moanalua High School gymnasium from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
