Gov. Ben Cayetano said he would be very disappointed if Vice President Al Gore loses the presidential race, especially since Gore won the nation's popular vote. Cayetano: Bush
can work with
isle DemocratsStill, he believes Texas Gov. George W. Bush won't steer the country wrong.
Bush's strength in Texas and his high approval rating mean he has been able to work with Democrats at all levels of government, Cayetano said.
"Well, since I had the opportunity to get to know this Republican governor personally, I don't think the country is going to collapse with George Bush in there," Cayetano said last week.
"I think he has the makings and the potential to be a good president. I think he's a fair man, and I think that the Hawaii delegation will be able to work with him."
Cayetano also defended the use of the electoral college, saying the founding fathers were wise to craft it in the U.S. Constitution.
"They set up the electoral college because they themselves did not trust the rule of the majority, and they wanted to make sure that in the end, you would have people who were considerate, intelligent, to make the final decisions in terms of casting their electoral vote," Cayetano said. "It protects the small states against the bigger ones."
The governor declined to predict the outcome of the Florida recount. While the margin of Bush's lead has been cut, he said Bush still has the advantage. And Cayetano believes the overseas ballots may likely favor Bush.
