Star-BulletinThis isn't quite as soon as Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida had hoped the process would begin when Les Murakami announced in May he would retire after the 2001 season.
However, there was a reason for the delay.
"We haven't hired a baseball coach in 31 years so we redid the job description," Yoshida said.
"We looked it over, updated it and made sure we covered all the specifics."
Yoshida wanted to make sure the head baseball coach's job description was in line with those of other programs that have hired head coaches in recent years.
After the position is advertised and responses are received, a short list will be prepared.
"We'll look at the applicants and go through interviews in January. It could be earlier, but that's the timetable now," Yoshida said.
With all positions on the current baseball coaching staff filled, Yoshida said the most logical option is to create a temporary administrative assistant's position for the new head coach.
Yoshida indicated he wants the new head coach to be here and get going once he is hired.
The Rainbow head baseball coach's salary range is $51,000 to $75,000. The new head coach is responsible for hiring his assistants.
