Free classes to help
elderly avoid falls

Residents 60 to 75 years old who are afraid of falling and meet certain criteria can learn how to remain active without falling during a free six-month class starting next month.

"No Fear of Falling," sponsored by Child & Family Service, will begin Oct. 16 at the agency's Ewa Community Center, 91-1841 Fort Weaver Road, Ewa Beach.

Classes will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

They are open to people who live in Ewa and Leeward areas, including Waianae; who have at least two chronic conditions or physical impairments that could cause falling; are independent with daily living activities and have a doctor's authorization to participate.

Falls are a leading cause of injuries and death among older people, Child & Family Service points out.

The "No Fear of Falling" program is made possible by the Public Health Fund of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii.

An occupational therapist will conduct the classes, which will include exercises to improve strength, balance and flexibility to prevent a fall.

Those interested may call Judy Knutson or Donna Goodwin at the Child and Family Service's Honolulu Gerontology Health Maintenance Program, 543-8421 or 543-8430.
