Powerman 5000's frontman, Spider, wears his comic
book and sci-fi influences on his sleeve, his chest, his
legs, and wait 'til you hear the music ... PM5K
performs Sunday at Worlds'.

Who’s got
the power?

The superhero costumes make sense for Powerman 5000.

As singer-lyricist Spider One has explained to the press, "Being in a band is as close as I could get to being an actual superhero. That's what this is all about for me, it's like being in the Avengers or the Defenders."

For a while, it seemed the Boston band would always be better known for its costumes than its music, which has changed more often than Madonna has changed mates.

In the early days, Spider (brother of Rob Zombie) tinged his vocals with hip-hop, and the band's aesthetic owed more to classic kung-fu flicks than the '50s sci-fi that shapes its current disc, "Tonight the Stars Revolt."

And PM5K's current growling power grooves, dubbed "action rock," are proving irresistible to those who discovered the band -- Spider, bassist Dorian, drummer Al 3, and guitarists Adam 12 and M.33 -- through its guest turns on soundtracks for "Titan A.E.," "Scream 3" and "Jailbait."

The song "When Worlds Collide," off "Tonight," earned the band time on radio and on tour with Sevendust and Kid Rock, which led to this year's Summer Sanitarium Tour with Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock & System of a Down.

And the adventure continues in Honolulu Sunday.
