Colin to Olympics
Star-Bulletin staffCHULA VISTA, Calif. - Kailua's Kathy Colin today joined fellow Hawaii kayak Peter Newton on the U.S. Olympic team.
This morning, Colin, a Punahou School graduate, earned her berth in the K2 500-meter competition at the U.S. Canoe/Kayak Flatwater team trials.
Newton, a Lutheran High graduate, wrapped up his third Olympic team berth as a K-4 1,000-meter kayaker yesterday
Colin failed to qualify in her K-1 500 attempt yesterday. Tamara Jenkins held off a furious finish from Colin to secure a berth.
Newton came in eighth in the K-2 500 in 1992 at Barcelon but was eliminated in Atlanta in the semifinals of the K-2 1000.
In 1999, he was a member of the gold medal K-4 1000 team at the Pan American
Games, also winning a silver medal in a K-1 500 boat.
At the World Cup in Poznan, Polland, Newton led the U.S. to second-place
finishes in the K-2 500 and K-4 200.
