Hawaii's Peter Newton earned his third Olympic team berth as a K-4 1,000-meter kayaker yesterday during U.S. Canoe/Kayak Flatwater Team Trials in Chula Vista, Calif.

But another Hawaii product, Kathy Colin, failed to qualify in her K-1 500-meter trials yesterday. Tamara Jenkins earned her first trip to the Games by holding off a furious finish from Colin.

Newton came in eighth in the K-2 500 in 1992 at Barcelon but was eliminated in Atlanta in the semifinals of the K-2 1000.

In 1999, he was a member of the gold medal K-4 1000 team at the Pan American Games, also winning a silver medal in a K-1 500 boat.

At the World Cup in Poznan, Polland, Newton led the U.S. to second-place finishes in the K-2 500 and K-4 200.
