Comedian Margaret Cho returns to Hawaii to debut her new film "I'm the One that I Want" at 8 p.m. Friday at the Hawaii Theatre, kicking off the 11th Annual Adam Baran Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

Cho, who appeared at Diamond Head Theatre in January, is the festival's "Special Honoree."

Tickets are on sale at the theater box office, or by calling 528-0506. VIP seating, which includes a post-premiere reception, is $35. General admission seats are $20. For more information call 941-0424, ext. 18.

Other guests for the May 25-June 3 festival include Judy Shepard who became an activist after her son, Matthew, was killed last year. She'll present the documentary "Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium" 8 p.m. Sunday at Hawaii Theatre.

The film focuses on the murder of Matthew Shepard, the dragging death of Texan James Byrd and the massacre at Columbine High School. Admission is $4 and $6.

A "High Art and Poetry" performance by Peter Rockford-Espiritu will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Theatre. Performers include the Tau Dance Theatre, Kim Char-Meredith and David DeBlieck.

Films will be screened Saturday through June 3, mostly at the acadetmy theater. See listing at right.

Adam Baran Gay &
Lesbian Film Festival

Films will be shown at the Academy of Arts Theatre, 900 S. Beretania, unless noted. Tickets are available 30 minutes prior to screenings. Tickets are $6 general, $4 for members of the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Foundation, the Academy of Arts and the Hawaii International Film Festival, as well as students and senior citizens.

"Living with Pride: Ruth Ellis at 100" -- Profile of a centenarian lesbian places her memories in the context of African-American history from lynchings early in the century to the social turmoil of the '60s and '70s.

Also, "But I Was A Girl" and "Jodie: An Icon."

4 p.m.
"Wallowitch & Ross: This Moment" -- Documentary about the lives of composer John Wallowitch and choreographer/ dancer Bertram Ross.

6 p.m.
"Lola und Bilidikid" -- Turkish view of Berlin's gay scene.

Sunday

1 p.m.
"Maiden Work" -- Banned in China, smuggled into the United States, "Maiden Work" tells the story of a woman falling in love with another woman.

"Just Desserts" -- Maria's sexual development seems irrevocably tied to food.

"kalin's prayer" -- A charismatic, crack-addicted lesbian model battles for the love of the New York civil rights attorney who comes to litigate in her bible-belt hometown of Tulsa, OK.

4 p.m.
"Straight from the Suburbs" -- The tables are turned on homophobia in this campy short.

"Maid of Honor" -- Stars local girl Kehaunani Hunt as a woman trying to carve out a place for herself.

6 p.m.
"Defying Gravity" -- Examines the coming out process for two types of gay men.

Also, "Makbul - His Favored One" and "Ferkel."

8 p.m.
"Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium" -- Documentary tells why hate crimes exist, and how hate can be eliminated.

"Paradise Bent" -- As men who dress as and completely take on the role of women, the fa'afine of Samoa present a societal view of sexual orientation foreign to many westerners.

6 p.m.
"Gendernauts" -- About people who alter their bodies and minds with new technologies and chemistry, with an emphasis on biological women who use the male hormone testosterone.

8 p.m.
"Aimee & Jaguar" -- The true story of Lilly Wust confronts Germany's past through a story of lesbian passion.

May 31

6 p.m.
"Three (Talto ... Magkasalo)" -- A rarely seen look at modern love relationships in the Philippines.

Also, "Below the Belt" and "Kiss My Cleats."

8 p.m.
"Not Love, Just Frenzy" -- A tale of seven young hipsters rampaging through Madrid.

June 1

6 p.m.
"In the Flesh" -- A cop is torn between love and duty in this film about the attraction between an undercover detective and a young gay hustler.

8 p.m. -- "Desperate Acquaintances" -- A Norwegian story of long-term friendships and hidden realities.

June 2

"All the Rage" -- Satiric comedy about a hunky attorney who meets a soulful editor.

8 p.m.
"2 x 4" -- Real men are in conflict with the freedom and anonymity of New York life.

"Mob Queen" -- An original spin on the mob mystique.

"But I'm a Cheerleader..." -- A high school cheerleader is sent to a rehabilitation camp run by a de-dragged Ru Paul.

"Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in the World" -- Animated short shows the adventures of Rick and Steve, the lesbians they don't like and artificial insemination.
