AT&T takes over Honolulu Cellular
Honolulu Cellular officially ceased to exist today as AT&T Wireless Services finalizes its takeover of the cell phone provider formerly owned by BellSouth Corp. AT&T bought Honolulu Cellular last year. Honolulu Cellular, founded in Hawaii in 1986 and bought by BellSouth in 1996, was Hawaii's oldest and largest wireless telephone business.
Bankoh gives $3 mil for rural development
Bank of Hawaii announced today that it will give $3 million to a private, nonprofit organization to boost economic development, affordable housing and other facilities of rural areas in Hawaii.The Rural Community Assistance Corp. will combine the gift with other funds to provide low-interest loans for development projects that would not normally qualify for bank loans. Projects are slated for Ele'ele on Kauai, Hana, Maui, and Waimea on the Big Island.
JDS Uniphase buys Chinese company
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- JDS Uniphase Corp. said today it has acquired China's Fujian Casix Laser Inc., a supplier of crystals, fiber-optic components and optics for telecommunications networks. Terms were not disclosed. Casix employs about 750 people in Fuzhou, in the southern province of Fujian. It will operate as a unit of JDS, the company said. JDS, based in San Jose, Calif., makes products for the fiber-optic communications market. It had revenue of $906.4 million in the nine months ended March 31.
